Living Glossary

Synecdoche - a part that represents the whole 
ex. Hired hand, set sail.

Metonymy - close association represent the whole
ex. speech from the throne

Denotation - literal translation

Connotation - implied meaning and mood

Feign - look alike ( appearance versus reality ) 

Pedagogy - way of teaching
ex. family/ experiential/ orality

Epistemology - way of knowing

Repatriation - bringing back to a nation/country/place

Antecedent Action - events relating to a work of literature but which occurred before the action begins

Aside - a short speech in a play that is heard only by the audience.

Black Humour - humour derived from topics normally considered decidedly unfunny, usually death

Catharsis - the purification of the emotions by way of release and renewal

Closet Dramas - plays meant to be read rather than performed

Comic Relief - a humorous scene designed to ease the tension in an otherwise serious play

Dramatic Purpose - the precise purpose served by each scene in a play - for instance, to develop plot, to reveal theme, or develop character.

Groundlings - lower class Elizabethan theatre-goers who stood on the group around the stage to watch the play 

Allusion - reference to another piece of writing

Serendipitous - making fortunate discoveries by accident

Malapropism - the misuse of a word becoming humorous
Abstract - hard concept to grasp, out side of the box

Alliteration - the use of the same letter in a row

Concrete - constituting an actual thing or instance.

Context - parts of a written or spoken statement that follow a specific word that effect the meaning of the statement

Imagery - the description in literature painting a picture in your mind

Dramatic Irony - when the audience knows but the characters do not understand

Situational Irony - Actions have the opposite effect of what was intended

Verbal Irony - Sarcasm

Line - verse of poetry or actors part in drama

Paradox - a hidden truth behind contradiction

Persona - characters or narrator

Personification - giving inanimate objects living characteristics

Repetition - the act of repeating

Simile - using like or as to describe something

Speaker - a person who formally speaks to a audience

Stanza - an arrangement of a certain number of lines

Symbol - used to represent a deeper meaning 

Understatement - a representation in a weak way that does not show the true facts
